The 5th Wave is a young adult science fiction novel by Rick Yancy.
In this book aliens invade the earth by integrating themselves into human society. The citizens never realize that they are living among aliens until the attack waves started. In total there were five waves in order to get rid of the human population and take over the earth. Cassie has to fight for her survival and to find her little brother, who is taken away from her. Along the way she meets the mysterious Evan Walker, he is her only hope of getting her brother back.
The 5th Wave is a pretty lengthy book and you have to have the time to actually sit down read. The reason is because of the different point-of-views the book written from. The book is divided in sections, and with each new section, you are introduced to a narrator and their point-of-view. In the beginning, it was hard to fully understand who was ‘speaking’, but once you get the hang of it, you will be able to anticipate the next point-of-view.
The book gives you a sense of mystery, and sometimes you don’t know who to trust. Not only that, but no matter how much it tells about about aliens, it is not enough: You want to know how they pass as humans for such a long time, or how do they know that one of them ISN’T one of their own. Throughout the book, you root for Cassie to find her brother and survive the alien invasion. All I have to say is, expect the unexpected.
Next book club meeting will be tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 17, where we will discuss It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini.
This book will also be a motion picture in 2016.
