Earlier this week, the Lady Husky basketball team competed against the Marshall Rams. After an intense game, the girls came out with a victory of 50-43.

The girls head coach, Gerald McCaslin, discussed a few things he was proud of after their game.

“First of all, I was happy that we finished a lot better. Our 4’s and 5’s, which are our posts, were able to complete a lot of the plays in the paint, which really helped us out. I was happy that we killed them on the boards; we did absolutely wonderful on the boards. We really controlled the tempo of the whole game with those two aspects,” McCaslin said.

McCaslin emphasized that the game was a team effort.

“It was a combined effort. There’s not really one person. Everybody collectively came in and did their job, and that’s what we’re all about. You come in and do your job. We all win, and we all take away from it,” McCaslin said.

Sophomore post player, Alissa Martinez, junior post player, Amaya West, and junior post and guard player, Diamond Sloan were spotlighted by McCaslin.

“Alissa had a double double. She had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Amaya had a double double. She had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Diamond had 9 boards,” McCaslin said.

Earlier in the season, the girls took on the O’Connor panthers, and fell short of a win. Coach McCaslin wants fans to be aware of what modifications he’s made since that last matchup.

“The fouls is what’s going to be key. They got a lot of touch fouls the first game. It was our first district game, so we might have been a little overzealous. Now we know how to play a little bit better and throw a couple of different bodies. We play a couple of different defenses now, so we’ll be able to shake things up a little bit more to protect our 4’s and 5’s on the inside that are battling. We’ll look for Ruth and Diamond to control a couple of their guards, mainly their one key guard that we did an excellent job on during the first game. We’re going to have to do the same thing this game because they’re going to be trying to get her loose this game,” McCaslin said.

Coach McCaslin shared his hopes for tomorrow’s game against the Panthers.

“I’m hoping we’ll be able to push them a little more than we did last time. We were right there with them. It was the first game of district, and we were still really young. I think this time around, we’re a little more experienced, a little more poised. We didn’t have Alissa. We had different people in different positions then. I’m looking this time for us to shake some things up on them a little bit on the defensive end as well as the offensive end. We’re a lot more patient. We understand the offense better. We understand where our shots come from and how to get them,” McCaslin said.
