As indicated by an email sent from NISD’s Superintendent Brian Woods to parents, the school district has been working with San Antonio Metro Health to monitor nearby COVID-19 information to decide the most ideal approach to bring students back.

NISD began returning students on September 8 after Labor Day.

Since then, the district has brought back small groups of students and will continue to do so in stages. Students with the most scholarly need will be brought back first.

“Special education students were among the first to be brought back because it’s so challenging to do distance learning effectively. But there are some kids with underlying health conditions that from being around any group outside of their household,” Woods says.

If there is the case of a breakout, according to Dr.Woods, students with symptoms will be placed in isolation rooms to wait for pick up by a parent or guardian.

“We’ll do what’s called ‘contact tracing’, where we look at who they’ve sat with and been near inside the classroom and at lunch and notify them that they’ve been in contact with that person. Which then they will self-quarantine 14 days.” Woods said.

The superintendent went on to say that if the symptomatic student tests positive the whole school will be notified.

Parents, teachers, and staff will continue to be updated as this process continues through emails or automated messages.
