On January 16, 2018, the city of San Antonio shut down for an unexpected snow, or ice, day. This weather day caused school districts across town to cancel school and classes, including NISD. Many were prepared to make up the day on the next scheduled weather make- up day, President’s Day; however, it wasn’t. Instead of using the weather make-up day, the district has decided to makeup the day on June 7, the day after the original last day of school. School principal Dr. Geri Berger explained why this happened.
“The district decided that it was very crucial for our staff to attend staff development day. It’s a district decision, not a campus one,” Berger said.
Senior Madeline Craig said that she wanted the make-up day to be on President’s Day.
“I would have liked it in February. I don’t want to be in school longer in June,” Craig said.
Some students have said they don’t mind the makeup day being added to the end of the year. Senior Tram Le actually prefers the makeup day to be on June 7.
“Having it at the end of the year is better. As seniors, we can be exempt from exams, so we won’t have to go,” Le said.
Many students are concerned due to planned vacations and exam schedules. It has been unclear what is going to happen as far as scheduling goes.
“The entire final exam schedule will shift. We will actually have our half days on June 6th and 7th, and the full days of exams will be on June 4th and 5th,” Berger said.
Students will be required to be at school on June 7. If students have already made plans to be gone on June 7th, they will “have to see our Academic Dean, Mrs. McCracken, and she will work through all of those particular situations,” Berger said.
