Preparing for college is a daunting task that can strike fear into the hearts of students. According to college career and military adviser Denise Orozco’s virtual classroom, there are steps to be taken each year as students advance through high school.
For some freshmen and sophomores, the concept of applying for college is not the first thing on the forefront of their minds. Though not that much can be done at this stage, there are a few things you can do.
- Focus on grades/GPA
- Prepare for PSAT
- Determine your dislikes/likes
- Participate in your student body and extracurricular activities
Junior year can be challenging and, as a result, it might feel like you don’t have time to look into colleges or scholarships, but on the contrary it is actually imperative you start now. As well as continuing last year’s tasks, there are a few more things that should be done.
- Practice college essays
- Think about college recommendations
- Look into schools and scholarships that you might be interested in
- Tour college campuses
- Start your academic resumes
- Join an honor society to make your college application much more appealing
Senior year is the final year to wrap up your time in high school. To make sure you’re properly prepared for the year ahead, there are quite a few more things that need to get done before next fall.
- Take the SAT or ACT
- Apply for FAFSA and other financial aid
- Work on college essays and transcripts
- Create an account on Apply Texas, Common App, or Coalition App
- Definitively determine where you want to go and why
- Find scholarships and volunteer opportunities
- Tour college campus and make living plans for the fall
- Find a job
- Talk to counselors and college advisor about college related concerns
College preparation may seem daunting, between the numerous projects and volunteer work needing to be maintained, but a balanced schedule ahead of time will greatly benefit students of all grade levels.
