Drama club announced the three options for the annual spring play at their last meeting on Sept 14 in the cafeteria. The three options that were presented were ‘The Miraculous Journeys of Edward Tulane’, ‘The Addams Family’, and ‘Shrek The Musical’; a good amount of the club expressed the most excitement at the mention of Shrek The Musical.
Drama Club works several months putting together one theatrical performance, voted on by the club members, which is brought to the stage in late April each year.
“We can already tell that Shrek is a very likely possibility,” Katarina, a member of the makeup crew, said.
A general excitement is expressed by the makeup crew towards The Addams Family due to the unique makeup styles they could experiment with in order to fit the aesthetics of the musical.
“Personally, I want The Addams Family to win,” makeup crew member Mia said. “I’m really big in the goth subculture makeup, so I know a lot about it.”
She expresses this makeup-wise, considering that if the club does decide to go with Shrek, the makeup crew will end up painting people green in order to look like the ogres, and the practice of animal faces will be learned before springtime arrives.
“I’m interested in seeing how, if Shrek wins, the make up is going to turn out, because that’s going to require a ton of makeup,” Katarina said.
Everyone seemed so sure about which play was going to win, despite the hard work that will have to be put into them.
“The Addams Family and Shrek The Musical are two very long productions that should run at about two and a half hours,” Drama Club sponsor John Chu said. “They are very big commitments that require a big crew.”
The officers and sponsor warned members that all options were quite ambitious for a small club, but members expressed their willingness to go through with any of them.
“Just because it’s a silly play doesn’t mean we’re not going to put in as much as we would in the other plays,” Ivanna, the assistant Drama Club’s director said in response to the excitement at putting together the production of Shrek The Musical. “We can do this.”
