In the student section, hearts were racing as the seconds counted down, and the clock showed zero. Water started to fly, as popcorn and cheers filled the air.

The cause for celebration was a win with the score of 56-41 against South San. The football team was able to break a 23 game losing streak that started in October of 2012. Head football coach Eddie Salas was celebrating as well.

“I don’t think I’ve been that happy in a long time. For me was the most gratifying thing was seeing [the players] happy,” Salas said.

With the newfound spirit, recent Killeen transfer senior Dominique Rogers enjoyed his first win with a new team.

“I felt very accomplished, seeing that I can be a part of this family and help out with the win,” Rogers said.

Being a new member may seem tough, but Rogers found it easy to blend in with a team that welcomed him with open arms.

“We have a team that is very accepting of people. Change is always good when you get a new player in, and [Rogers] mixes well with the other players,” Salas said.

The football coaches have been very excited for the season, and equally excited about receiving a new member who is an incredible addition to the pack.

“I feel it’s no pressure at all. Working with the guys during the summer really helped the chemistry with us. They gave me a big welcome to the team,” Rogers said.

Still, it’s only the beginning of the season and the coaches will try to use his talents and their players strengths to go for another win. Although a new player, Dominique fits in extremely well with the rest of the team. When they play together, he knows that he is one of them.

“I just want us to focus, stay humble, stay close, and have each other’s backs,” Rogers said.

The team takes on Del Rio High School in Del Rio tonight, hoping to bring the win total to two games for the season. Follow @holmesbcnews on social media for game updates.
