CAPTION: Junior lineman Thomas Torres congratulates senior receiver Curtis Farrior in the end zone after a 72-yard catch and run by Farrior off of a double-pass trick play from senior receiver Chris Rios, who played quarterback last year. The score put the Huskies within a touchdown against the Hutto Hippos last Friday night at the homecoming game.

After two winless seasons, the varsity football team took the field for a homecoming showdown with the Hutto Hippos on Friday hoping for a third win in four games to start this season. While the final score wasn’t what players and fans hoped for, with the Huskies falling to the Hippos 30 to 50, there were plenty of big plays and exciting moments on offense to carry the team forward the rest of the season.

The stands were full of mums, proud parents and energetic students standing shoulder-to-shoulder with little room to move around. All of the eyes were on the game, and the offense provided plenty for the fans to cheer about.

During the second quarter, things got interesting when Joel Ortiz threw a screen pass to Chris Rios. Hutto’s defensive backs got sucked in when they saw that Rios had the ball because previously in the game, the offense had completed screen passes several times. Hutto’s defense was ready for another one. The defense charged toward Rio,s ready to tackle him. Just before they got to Rios, he had the chance to launch the ball to a wide-open Curtis Farrior, who then caught the ball in the open field, sprinting toward the end zone and leaving everyone behind him. He ran a total of 72 yards and put the Huskies within a touchdown of Hutto, bringing the score to 16-21.

“I knew it would be as easy as it was in practice. Everyone just had to do their own part and I knew they would,” Farrior said about the play.

With team work, they completed a great play that stood out and brought the crowd to a frenzy. The trick play, known as a double-pass,  was something the coaches and players were working on in practice, Rios’ past experience helped make it successful.

“Joel Ortiz [the quarterback] threw it to Chris Rios who was our quarterback last year, and then he threw it to Curtis,” said Head Varsity Coach Eddie Salas.

Coach Salas then continued on in excitement while talking about this play.

“This was a double pass trick play that we did and obviously it worked well,” said Salas.

This play was one of the highlights of the whole game. This play, along with other big offensive plays such as another long pass for a touchdown early in the game from Ortiz to senior receiver Dominique Rogers, prove that this year’s team has more firepower than in the past few seasons. While turnovers and Hutto’s own ability to make big plays ultimately lead the team to fall short of a victory, the creative play calling and dynamic offense have the potential to pay off in district play.

District play begins this Friday night against Warren High School for their homecoming game at Gustafson Stadium at 7:30pm, where the offense will have another chance to make big plays, as the defense looks to stop the Warren Warrior offense.
