For student-athletes, one of the most important, meaningful days of the school year is the tryout day for their sport.

Soccer, baseball and softball season are preparing to start their season, and the student-athletes are getting ready for this important event.

With the season already underway, basketball tryouts are already in the rear-view mirror, as students had their chance to make the team on Nov.r 9. For boy’s basketball, over 35 students tried out, taking on difficult tasks to prove their abilities.

“We had four phases: running, dribbling drills with cones, passing drills, and finally we scrimmaged,” junior Sergio Terrazas said.

The difficulty of these tryouts is often underestimated by those who have no experienced it.

“You gotta compete with the players that are trying to make the team, but then also with the players that are already on the team to earn your spot,” junior Hector Ibarra said.

While most people are getting ready for Thanksgiving, boys soccer athletes are striving to be ready for their tryout days Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. Being able to make the team all depends on how much effort is put into the day and on how badly you want it.

“It depends on how hard you want to work. I believe that a team filled with hard-workers is much better than a team filled with talented, but lazy players,” junior Mark Martinez said.
After the new year,, tryouts for baseball will be held around Jan. 18. Student-athletes on the baseball team recognize that making the team is about more than wearing a jersey and swinging bats, and that the bond of being a part of something bigger is the real payoff.

“The brotherhood is very strong in baseball. Some people consider us to be a really strong squad, and I totally agree with it,” senior Tyler Dick said.

Making the team doesn’t only mean you get to play the sport, but you build the bond of a second family as well.
Meanwhile, the softball team hopes to continue their tradition of success and playoff appearances, and there are plenty of girls ready to show their great potential to be a part of the success. Tryouts for softball will be held on Jan. 23. Some student-athletes are simply eager to be playing the sport.

“I’m excited because I like to play softball. Just being on the field takes away stress,” sophomore Reina Herrera said.
Tryout days are the opportunities that student-athletes get to prove to people that they have put in the hard work, and to make their mark on the team and on the school community.
