Many students may not know what goes into being a part of the Cyber Patriot team, and for some, they may not have even heard from the group. Regardless of what their peers know or don’t know, this year’s team is making history by advancing to nationals for the first time ever.
Some people think that working with computers can’t be an action-packed activity, but the things that the Cyber Patriot team does can change perspectives.
What they do in reality is full of action. It’s similar to what spies do in movies to stop the villain or conflict. Having to work hard, efficiently and in the quickest time possible before the enemy gets a hold of the software first.
“We compete doing cyber security, which is protecting our computers from hackers, viruses, from any vulnerability that would damage the network or the computer,” instructor Gerald Mccaslin said.
“Ecstatic” was the only way that the Cyber Patriot team could describe how they felt when they found out they were going to nationals.
“We were ecstatic. It was a huge team improvement from last year. When we found out that we were going to nationals, we were psyched,” junior Noah Woinicki said.
Not only is competing in the national competition an interesting experience, but it also helps the students have a leg up in a growing field for a future career.
“Everything that would do here is in real life. A lot of these students can take the knowledge that they have right now and can go on and get high-level jobs in the industry. Things that they’re doing are directly relatable to things that are being done and at the highest level in the military, at Rack Space, and USAA,” Mccaslin said.
