In between classes and at lunch, you might hear a conversation like this:

“Dude, did you go to the football game last night? It was so intense!”

“No, I went to this show and got to meet this cool band that performed.”

Many students would rather go to a music show than a school event because their interests are different compared to other their peers and past generations.

Students on campus attend little shows at small venues around San Antonio to find neat bands that aren’t very popular yet, or they just go to see their friends perform.

Junior Adrian Soules, who attends these shows often, feels that he is a very musical person.

“I am more accepted there than I am at school because music doesn’t have an influence on everyone at school. Also, you’re surrounded by people who have similar interests,” Soules said.

Senior Carlos Cardenas attends shows at places like Imagines Books and Records close by campus.

“I’m a very musical person and seeing some of my friends perform at Imagines is really cool, rather than going to school events I’m not really into,” Cardenas said.

Students attend shows at Imagine Books and Records every weekend or even see the during the week shows after school. These shows can included bands from out of town or state, or even just local bands trying to make a name for themselves. It can also included poets or authors reading their work to the audience. Just going to one of these shows can vary, but if students follow Imagines on social media, they can be updated on what kind of performers are going to be there for the show.

Ezra Hurd, an employee at Imagines and also the owners son, talked about his family’s reason for opening a shop like their’s for teens and young adults.

“My dad was a writer and in a band when he was younger and living in San Francisco. It had a big influence on him, so he decided to open this little shop for everyone to experience for themselves which is why we have musical performances and readings from poets and writers. It’s really great seeing all these teens come to shows with all their friends and then make new friends with the other people in the audience or the performers. My all time favorite thing about seeing all these young people here is that they have a good time and keep coming back for more shows and great memories,” Hurd said.
