CAPTION: Varsity players regroup after the first set of the game against Taft. The girls defeated Taft in three sets to win the match.

The volleyball teams are a third of the way through their season. The varsity record is 17-11, junior varsity 5-2, and freshman 1-5.

Lori King, freshman volleyball coach, has been working with her players since mid summer to improve their skills and fundamentals of high school volleyball. She spoke on behalf of the incoming freshman team and their current status in the season.

“The girls are working on their skills and learning how to play high school volleyball, so that leads to some struggles throughout the games, but overall there are some improvements,” said King. “I’m trying to get them prepared to play at a junior varsity level, and eventually, a varsity level. We might take some hits as a team in the process, but that’s the ultimate goal.”

Freshman players Jaiyden Anderson, Desiree Rojas, Victoria Wilborn, and Angel Martinez are four of many that are showing many improvements.

“Victoria and Angel are doing really well on defense and on their passing,” King said. “Jaiyden is learning how to hit quicker sets, and Desiree is improving on her hitting skills.”

Junior varsity coach, Shelby Burton, gloats about her team. Her new and returning players have been working for a good season, most, since last years season ended, which is going in a positive direction due to their wellness shown on the court.

“A goal is to have a winning season in district since it’s a tough one, but I would like to also beat the teams that we usually fault to,” Burton said.

Burton’s team has shown improvements on running plays and incorporating their serves, but she compliments two of her players, freshman Ashleigh Ramirez and junior Sofia Torres, as two of her most dominant players at the moment.

“They have the most power on the team and put the ball away. They also have the best serves,” Burton said.

Varsity volleyball coach Laura Suarez explains what her teams record is like both overall and in district.

“It’s going better than expected. Actually, it’s going great,” Suarez said.

She has been working with her players in every skill necessary. She applauds three of her senior players, Martina Ayala, Anabel Korrodi, and Isabel Korrodi.

“Martina has the most consistent hits on the team at the moment. Isabel’s setting is incredible, and Anabel’s defense is just great,” Suarez said.

The varsity team takes on the Brandies Broncos tomorrow, Sep. 13, at Paul Taylor Field House at 5:30pm.
