After a rough stretch of games for varsity football, tonight’s matchup at Gus stadium at 7:30pm against the Taft Raiders for homecoming still offers a chance at a playoff spot.
If the team beats Taft by 18 points or more, they would be in a three-way tie with Taft and Marshall, and a coin toss would decide which team faced the other zone for the final playoff spot (likely Warren HS). If the Huskies can make that happen, win a coin toss, and win the subsequent cross-zone game, they’d be in for the playoffs. Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect tonight:
Co-offensive coordinator Sean Salinas speaks on behalf of Taft’s defensive line.
“They have a couple of good d-linemen up front. I think their secondary is not as good as their front seven are, so I think we can exploit them a little bit. We’re going to try and use that to our advantage and just knowing where to be so we can give our guys an opportunity,” Salinas said.
Coach Salinas explains their hopes for tonight’s game.
“I’m hoping they can give the fans a good show. I’m hoping that we can play hard and execute on both sides of the ball, so we can give ourselves a great victory, not only for ourselves but for the fans and everybody that comes out to see us,” Salinas said.
Head coach Juan Morales discusses their opponents offense and backfield.
“Taft runs a spread offense, so it’s unique in terms of the way they run their backfield. It’s still a spread concept, so we’re going to go ahead and be sure we can cover all the avenues and still accommodate the new backfield they have,” Morales said.
Throughout the season the football team have been working hard, and here’s what Coach Morales had to say about it:
“This year has been a learning process for them. It’s been tough, just because they haven’t had a lot of consistency week by week. I think that the seniors understand and feel the pressure because they wanted to have such a great year, but at the same time, we have so many juniors and sophomores playing on the varsity team. They understand that they still have a second opportunity, they know the extent of what this game means, and they want to make sure they finish off on a good note. Hopefully with the seniors wanting to finish on a good note, and the underclassmen wanting to have a win for them, they’ll work together,” Morales said.
