This past Friday, the varsity football team competed against Brennan High School in a grueling match at Ferris Stadium. The Huskies couldn’t overcome a huge deficit in the first quarter resulting in a 55-6 lost to the Bears.
The first half was very similar to start of the Stevens game. The huskies knew they had seen a start like this to a game before, and tried to shake it off.
“We knew we had to look past the score and just finish the game,” senior captain Jay Cruz said.
The Bears ran up the scoreboard putting the Huskies in a 28 point deficit early on in the first quarter. Senior quarterback James Valdez struggled early as he fumbled on their second drive resulting in a fast touchdown by Brennan. From that moment on, the Huskies looked out of whack on both sides of the football. The constant three-and-outs, failed stops on defense, and lack of confidence plagued the team.
But not all was bad, the Huskies special teams made a huge play putting up six points as their reward. Junior wide receiver Quentrevious Wright punted the football 76 yards down field. As the ball was hanging in the air, Senior defensive end Robert Perez hustled down field to make the initial hit causing the punt returner to fumble and the Huskies to recover it in the end zone, scoring a touchdown to end the half 42-6.

The second half wasn’t much different from the first half; mistakes were still being made on both sides of the ball and the Huskies just looked tired and frustrated as the game came to a finish, with a score of 55-6. Players are taking the loss in stride, trying to use it as jumping off point for improvement down the stretch.
“We need to start off fast, and continue to humble ourselves. We also need to spend more time studying our opponent,” senior defensive end Joseph Vasquez said when asked what he and his team needs to do to perform well this upcoming game.
Despite a tough loss, the Huskies still continue to move forward. There is still a chance at a playoff berth for Holmes as they face Brandeis High School at Gus Stadium at around 7:00 this Friday. If the Huskies win the next district game, we are officially in the playoffs, which would mark the first Husky team to do so since 2000.
Students and staff are encouraged to attend the game at Gus Stadium, and help support the squad on their quest to make the playoffs.
