Saturday night at 7:00pm at Gus stadium the varsity football team will compete against the Stevens Falcons. Here’s a preview of what the team and fans should expect this weekend:
After a big win against Harlandale, the defensive line received the junkyard dog award. Defensive coordinator Adrian Trevino explains how they contributed to the game.
“They say in coaching, you always learn more from losses than from wins because sometimes when you win ball games, it kind of covers up mistakes. It kind of slips your mind of how you could’ve done better, but I’m going to tell you that this was a very big win for us. Defensively speaking, we’re still young, but we showed a lot of maturity last week, and it was a big confidence builder for our defense. It was by far the best defensive showing we’ve had this year. This game they really showed what they were capable of doing,” Trevino said.
Co-offensive coordinator Sean Salinas talks about what Stevens’ defense might look like and expectations he has for the game.
“Defensively from Stevens, we expect to see a 4-2 front. Their D-line is decent. The defense overall is pretty good. They have some speed in their secondary and some guys that can make some plays. We’re looking for them to be pretty active, but not move around to a bunch of the formations that we have,” Salinas said.
Although a few football games have occurred already, the team will compete in their first district game Saturday night.
“This being our first Northside matchup, I think that the kids are going to come out excited and play hard like they normally do. I’m expecting them to throw the ball around a lot. Steven’s has a new quarterback this year because their quarterback last year graduated and went to UTSA. They’ve always done a good job at developing their next level of players. We’re not going to expect anything different from them this year. They’re going to look at trying to put up some points, so defensively for us, we need to be prepared for anything we may see. It’s going to be a great matchup,” Trevino said.
Coach Salinas sees a clear path forward for more improvement.
“It’s just being consistent, learning from the little mistakes we had last game, continuing to build what we’ve built since spring ball and these last couple games to get it right for this time, for district. We’re just trying to put together our best ball game on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively,” Salinas said.
