The Huskies have been preparing all week to take on the team’s oldest rival, the Marshall Rams, tonight for the homecoming game which kicks off this evening at Gustafson Stadium at 7:00pm on the home side. After a tough loss against the Brandies Broncos last week, the team is looking forward to a better matchup against Marshall.
Head coach Juan Morales shared what was learned from last week’s game and how the team is going to apply it tonight against Marshall:
“We lost a lot of momentum at the beginning of the game and that put us in a tough position. I was really proud of our boys because they continued to fight all the way through, ended up scoring some points, and got the work done. They buckled down a little bit in terms of making sure the game didn’t get out of hand and it ended up being a good lesson for us,” Morales said.
Morales also spoke about Marshall’s offense and how the team is going to take them on:
“Marshall has a really good running back. He’s really fast when he gets out in the open. Our job is like cowboys herding the cattle, except we have to herd him in and make sure he doesn’t get away. Their quarterback is also really good at throwing the ball well, so we are going to have to play carefully to see if we can take most of those good things away,” Morales said.
Morales also shared his thoughts about Marshall’s defense and what the fans should expect to see from them tonight:
“Marshall has always been really feisty. They never give up, and they play hard. We are kind of checking to see if we can take advantage of some of the alignments they give us. We are hoping to get DQ and our runner out in the open to try to outrun somebody,” Morales said.
Morales also gave insight on some injuries that may be important to tonights game:
“We had some significant injuries last week and we have for sure confirmed that Chris Medelez broke his fibula. We had a few offensive linemen that have been in and out also. Julian Guedea sprained his knee, Jake Lee’s shoulder is not as good as we’d like it, and Daniel Perkins has a hip pointer injury,” Morales said.
Morales also let us know who to keep an eye on this game and why:
“We are looking to get Raymond Rios going because he did really good on the passes he did on Brandeis. Chris Melero ran the ball well and he was able to score and DQ was able to do some things. Defensively, we are looking for our linebackers to play a better game then they did last game. We faced a lot of things wrong, lost our keys, and are just trying to pick those keys up,” Morales said.
How should fans best support the team this week:
“It was tough last week because of the cold,” Morales said. “So I understand why not everyone came out, but this is homecoming and the weather promises to be really good and so we just want to see the stands packed this weekend.”
