If you caught the latest print edition of The Gavel in your 7th period, then you know we introduced our latest interactive feature. So here is game one of our bean and cheese taco tournament:
The Gavel Staff begins the 1st Annual HHS Taco Tourney with a ferocious battle between Blue Plate Award winning Food Joint, Dos Quality and Flavor, going head to head with the long-time walking distance round favorite, Los Balitos Tacos.
Before we get to the results, you might be wondering why we are eligible to rank tacos, and who gave us the authority to start this tournament. High school students are the main profit source for these restaurants due to the close proximity to our Husky Home, so we know when we eat a good taco. And what is the most fundamental, basic taco in San Antonio breakfast taco culture? The bean and cheese. So we tasted bean and cheese from both locations.
Our staff developed a system to rank these tacos and to determine the victor.
The first rubric item we have is the bean-to-cheese ratio; just how balanced these tacos are. Los Balitos won this point of the round.
Next is the bean quality. Do they taste like canned beans, or freshly made beans? Dos won in this section with superior bean to Los Balitos.
Another item is the cheese quality. Is it grated american cheese, or high quality dairy? Los Balitos stole this point.
The tortilla quality is next on the list, bought from the store or homemade by Mom tasting? Dos claims the better tortillas.
The value of the tacos is next, where price and size are considered here. Dos has the advantage with their nice low prices.
Finally, we have the convenience of the location, just how far is it, and how fast is the service? Once again, Dos wins this round, being just across the street, a few steps closer than Los Balitos.
Once we begin the round, staff members anonymously rank them to make it as unbiased as possible, then collect the scores and see who won when we reveal the victor.
For the first round of this year’s Taco Tourney, Dos Quality and Flavor claims the title after careful consideration and is moving on the the next round of the competition.
Next time, tune in to find out who wins the next big struggle, Taurinos vs. Tink-A-Taco.
Great taco match. Keep it up.
