Bone Gap is a young adult, magical-realism book by Laura Ruby.

The strange, magical, corn-talking little town that is known as Bone Gap is the home of two brothers, Finn and Sean O’Sullivan. As with your everyday, typical little town, everyone knows everybody, from their secrets to their tragedies. But this town is still filled with mysteries, and their most loved mystery was Roza. Just as quickly and unexpectedly as she arrived, she left, or at least that’s what the town people assumed happened. To them, she was too beautiful to be in a little town like Bone Gap, so it didn’t come as a surprise when one day she just disappeared.

It seems Finn O’Sullivan knows what happened to her. Roza didn’t leave on her on will, she was kidnapped. The problem is that no one believes Finn, not his brother Sean, nor the police, and the fact that he couldn’t describe the face of the kidnapper made his ‘story’ seem unbelievable. The book follows the story of Finn, Sean, Roza and the townspeople and how the expectations and opinions of society affects everyone.

Bone Gap was such a magical book, not only because of the setting, but also because of what it teaches you. There are so many lessons that, as a reader, you can learn because of what the characters go through or just by the way they act. While reading the book there will be times when you don’t know what is happening and it gets a little bit confusing, but if you just keep reading, you will understand. Also while reading, keep in mind that is a magical-realism book, which is why there will be some things that will make you go “wait, what?”. Apart from that, the reader will be able to experience multiple point of views throughout the book, as well as flashbacks.

If you are one of those readers that likes to know exactly why or how things happen, then this wouldn’t be the perfect book to read because of the genre that is it (magical realism), so it won’t be as easy to grasp. But DO READ IT if you want a book that will keep you turning pages.

If you’re interested in talking more about great books, there will be a book club meeting tomorrow 4/19 after school at 4:15 in the library. We will be discussing Asylum by Madeleine Roux.
