Did you know that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds? Suicide rates increased 37% between 2000-2018 and decreased 5% between 2018-2020, but however, rates returned to their peak in 2022. More than 700,000 people in 2024 have taken their lives.
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month – a time to remember all of the beautiful souls that were lost due to suicide. September was first declared as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in 2008. September has been a time to acknowledge those affected by suicide and to spread awareness. Suicide has been identified as a national health problem. Depression, anxiety and substance abuse are most often associated with suicide.

People who are considering suicide may show signs that they are thinking about or planning to attempt suicide. Not everyone shows the same signs that they’re thinking about suicide, but these kind of behaviors and feelings are a cause for concern. If someone you know: Talk’s about suicide, has trouble eating or sleeping, loses interest in school, work or hobbies, gives away prized possessions or even has attempted suicide before.
Do not leave them without a care in the world, seek help. Suicide is not a joke, it is a real thing sadly. Asking about thoughts or feelings about suicide will not push a person into suicide. Giving someone a chance to talk and vent may actually help them with whatever they’re going through. Remember that you’re not alone, there will always be someone out there to help you or your loved ones.
