Breast Cancer Awareness within Sports

Have you ever asked yourself why do athletes wear pink during the month of October? It’s because October is breast cancer awareness month. Many athletes in different sports wear pink. Some athletes have had family members suffer from breast cancer and others are just spreading awareness. Breast cancer is very serious and sometimes can be lethal. Athletes may go through struggles in their family and October is a month where they can express and spread awareness on how they have overcome these journeys and struggles.

NFL players sometimes pop out with pink cleats, gloves, arm sleeves, wrist tape, turf tape, mouthpieces, etc. The list goes on and on. Players like Deangelo Williams and Emmit Smith, some NFL legends, have had family members suffer from breast cancer. They honor them for fighting through that journey win or loss by wearing pink. The pink represents stories to them. It brings back memories on how their family members struggled, all the hard times. This shows what they have been through and how they have overcome it. Many other players that may have played with Emmit Smith or Deangelo Williams wore pink to show respect and spread awareness to fans.

Baseball is also a huge part of breast cancer awareness. Many players wear pink sleeves and gloves to represent and spread awareness. Some people even wrap the end of their bat in pink bat tape. Players like Colin Walsh have had family members that had breast cancer and they wear pink during October to represent it.

On our campus, our Lady Jags Volleyball team has a tradition on their pink out games. They have their socks, big pink bows, their Breast Cancer Awareness bands, some wear arm sleeves, and they all give a red rose to their Mom, Aunt, Grandma, or teacher that is here to support them. It’s pretty awesome and the flower recipients always appreciate it.

Wearing pink accessories is a great way to represent Breast Cancer and Spread Awareness.
