Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world, and while it’s all about joy, love, and giving, the way people celebrate can be quite different depending on where you live! From decorations to food, let’s explore some fun Christmas traditions from around the globe.
United States
In the United States, Christmas is often celebrated with decorated trees, twinkling lights, and stockings hung by the fireplace. Families exchange gifts on Christmas morning, and many enjoy a big feast with turkey, ham, or other favorite dishes. Santa Claus, dressed in red with a jolly laugh, is a central figure, bringing presents to children who have been nice all year.
Mexico
In Mexico, Christmas celebrations include Las Posadas, a nine-day event leading up to Christmas. During these days, people reenact Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter before Jesus was born. Piñatas shaped like stars are also popular, filled with candies for children to enjoy. On Christmas Eve, families gather for a midnight feast and attend a special church service.
Germany
Germany is famous for its Christmas markets, where people can buy handmade gifts, ornaments, and delicious treats like gingerbread and roasted nuts. Advent calendars are a big tradition, helping families count down the days until Christmas. On December 6th St. Nicholas visits children, leaving treats in their shoes if they’ve been good.
Japan
In Japan, Christmas isn’t a traditional holiday, but it has become a fun time to spread happiness. One unique tradition is eating KFC for Christmas dinner! This started as a clever marketing campaign but became a beloved custom. People also enjoy decorating with lights and exchanging small gifts.
Sweden
In Sweden, Christmas starts early with St. Lucia Day on December 13th. Girls dress in white gowns with candles on their heads to honor St. Lucia, the bringer of light. Families also enjoy traditional foods like ginger snaps and rice pudding. Swedish Christmas trees are beautifully decorated with straw ornaments.
Philippines
The Philippines has some of the longest Christmas celebrations, starting as early as September! Families hang star-shaped lanterns called parols and attend Simbang Gabi, a series of church services leading up to Christmas.
