Does anyone really know where the lububu came from, or why it became so popular? And another I have a bigger question: why are these evil looking dolls so overpriced!? Don’t get me wrong I may have wanted one of these things at one point, but seriously where did these guys come from? Well if you’re as curious as I am, read this article to find out the creepy history of the Labubu.

The Labubu Lore

The Labubu came from a kids book “the monsters” created by Kasing Lung in 2015. Kasing Lung was born in Hong Kong, he spent his childhood in Utrecht, Netherlands. While Kasing Lung was growing up in the Netherlands, he was inspired by the tales of elves and mythical creatures, which gave him inspiration for the characters in his book “Monsters.” The series launched in 2015, with all of the elves and other mystical creatures the Labubu was the most popular out of all of them. Despite the Labubu’s devilish grin and sharp pointy ears the characteristics of the Labubus are kind hearted and always wanting to help, though it might end up in chaos.

The Creation of the Toy

The original Labubu doll was a collaboration with the Hong Kong company How2Work. This led to the design of the toy that we all know today, with its large head pointy ears and short limbs. In 2019 Lung signed an exclusive deal with pop mart, which made the blind box series collectibles. The Labubu didn’t really start to gain its popularity until a post from K-pop lisa was with a giant Labubu in 2024, This created lots of more attention towards the Labubu and helped it go viral globally. With a lot of videos with the Labubu blind box, everyone was raving over it. The Labubu has become the cute but evil looking toy some people hate and love.

Labubu Conspiracy Theory

Now do you really wanna know the creepy thing about these little guys, though these are just conspiracy theories, it’s always fun to see what people have to say about these dolls. The demonic comparison. In mid 2025 many people on social media have compared Labubu to a mischievous looking evil elf to a demon called Pazuzu. An ancient Mesopotamian demon,

known from the horror movie The Exorcist. An AI image of pazuzu was shown on social media comparing the Labubu and it side by side. As the comparison spread a viral speculation spread implying that the Labubus random fame was because the dolls were possessed. Many people say the dolls had bad luck, or that they saw the doll moves.

Through the many conspiracies the creator of the Labubu intentions were not for the doll to be seen as a demonic creature, but just as a cute mischievous elf. Though many people have opinions on these evil looking guys, I don’t think the Labubu is that bad. And, after finding out the origin of it, I think it’s pretty cute. The only real creepy thing about those Labubus are the prices.
