Game Time vs Study Time

The worldwide struggle for all student athletes, balancing sports and grades. No matter how good of an athlete you are, there will always be grades to maintain. This is where the name “student athlete” originates from.

A way to solve this ongoing problem is prioritizing a plan to make time on the weekends to studying and getting work done. This can help getting caught up with a ton of stuff. This also benefits the effect of decreasing screen time within athletes to better focus.

A lot of athletes end up getting cut before week 2 due to failing 1 or more classes. This can severely affect a team’s performance due to missing players. Being a student athlete requires perseverance and determination on and off the field.

I interviewed Garrett Fussell (8th) about how he views the relationship between athletics and grades. He told me that he has many disciplinary actions that teaches him ways to manage his time effectively with sports and grades. One strategy Garrett uses is communicating with his teachers to arrange tutoring times and complete any missing assignments. Another step Garrett takes is making sure he stays on track with assignments and submits his work by the deadlines. This is a way of saving time which can be used for sports. These are two strategies of the many ways managing your time can be effective with sports and grades.

Balancing sports and grades is never easy, but it is possible with the right mindset and strategies. Athletes who learn to manage their time, communicate with teachers, and stay disciplined not only improve their grades, but also improve their performance on and off the field. Being a student athlete means carrying responsibilities in both areas, and success comes from finding that balance. In the end, the lessons learned in managing schoolwork and sports go beyond the classroom or the game along with building responsibility, perseverance and focus that will benefit athletes throughout their lives.
