To remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks, administration held a 9/11 memorial ceremony on September 11th at 7:50 a.m. This was held in the auditorium where students and staff both came to remember the day.

The event gave everyone a chance to think back on the history and circumstances that took place on 9/11.

“Well, I think the ceremony is a time of remembrance and reflection of a tragic, tragic event in our history,” LMS principal Margaret Bray said. “And it’s a time to reflect on those that served and those that lost their lives.”

Staff weren’t the only ones who felt this way. Students, despite not having any recollection of the day, also have some of their own opinions on the event.

“The ceremony event to me is a sign of good respect for all the men and women that have lost their lives within the event in 9/11,” junior Aidan Tavor said. “It was probably the first act of terrorism that we’ve had in the United States, as far as you know us actually officially getting attacked.”

For current students, none of them were around when the 9/11 attacks took place, so this ceremony gives them a look into the mourning that took place.

“I guess for the lesson to learn, a lot of us were not born around 2001 so I guess taking on a great chance of history that we’ve, you know, being able to learn the tragic things that have happened in our history,” Tavor said. “And then the rewarding things that we’ve been able to learn from our mistakes and be able to embed ourselves as a people and, of course, as a country.”

While it was a nationwide tragedy, connecting it to the community continues to honor past and present veterans.

“I’m a San Antonio Police Explorer,” Tavor said.  “So as far as that, we do a lot of things connecting with the community, to be able to open ourselves out and show that we are there for the community.”

Being in Police Explorers, they held an event at Marshall, but also their own ceremony at Oak Hills Terrace Elementary School open to first responders and the veterans of the military.

“ I think the 911 ceremony, every single time, is a great time to show how many sacrifices, there are within our armed forces and first responders,” Tavor said. “It was a really tragic moment.”
