Mock Trial Competition

The LMS Mock Trial team will find out their scores and if they make state tomorrow. On November 5th, the team competed in Austin.
The team has been preparing for its first competition since September. They analyze the case presented to them, learn the witness’ testimonies, then begin working on opening and closing arguments. The case given this year was a murder case.
“This case was more complex to deal with, but I thought it was a lot more interesting this year than previous years,” co-captain Alyssa Homsy said.
This year the team didn’t have mentors to help them break down the cases, so the new captains and co-captains were able to help the teams. There are 10 different teams composed of a mix of grades.
“Some schools will do a hierarchy system, but I like that with us it can be a mix of people so there is a mix of experiences,” said Homsy.
The team competes in the Austin district against East Central High school, Veterans Memorial High School, and Fox Tech High School.
“It’s cool to see new people, but it’s also cool to see old people,” Homsy said. “Last year one of the teams we went against at state, we went against them at district, and it was like ‘Hey, we missed you.’”
Some teams have been together since freshman year, and they are hoping to make it to state this year.
“I’m very proud of everyone on my team, we’ve come such a long way since freshman year,” Homsy said. “We have great chemistry, and it’s really nice working with them.”
Wow.
