In return for a recipe, a quarter will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank. She has already raised money for 112 meals. Along with her donation, Ms. Christensen, a substitute, plans on matching  the amount.

November is known as the month of thanksgiving, but it is also National American Indian Heritage Month. To honor both of these occasions, librarian Mrs. Jenke has put together a project to highlight them. She calls it “Knowvember.”

The project started with the idea of sharing the culture for National American Indian Heritage Month. Mrs. Jenke set up multiple displays to celebrate this month filled with books. She even set up a sign that includes the traditional owners of the land Marshall was built on, which were the Jumanos, the Coahuiltecan, the Lipan Apache, and the Tonkawa tribe.

“I want to bring awareness to different cultures and things we need to be aware of,” Mrs. Jenke said.

Mrs. Jenke found a way for students to share their culture while also giving back. She wants to celebrate students’ cultures in Marshall and writing down a recipe can give them the opportunity to share a small piece of their culture.

“I want you to talk to your family and relatives,” Mrs. Jenke said. “I hear kids talking about tamales, so why not bring in your favorite tamale recipe.”

She wants students to become familiar with the nonfiction area of the library, so she has provided cook books that the students can pull recipes from.

“Through “Knowvember,” they’re able to go into the shelves and utilize the resources,” Mrs. Jenke said. “It helps them learn the process of getting information, actually copying it down, synthesizing what’s on the recipe and taking it from one point to the next.”

Overall, Mrs. Jenke is trying to bring awareness to nonfiction books, culture, and hopes to bring in new students she hasn’t been able to reach. If you would like to write a recipe, visit the library for a slip to fill out.

“I want y’all to be proud of where y’all are from and be proud of your culture,” Mrs. Jenke said. “I love getting to know all of you because all of you have different stories and you are all unique, that is what makes me happy.”
