Hobby-oriented clubs aren’t the only thing the campus offers. There are core subject associations and honor societies that anyone can join with the right experience and qualifications, or even just general interest! Welcome to the Club Spotlight Corner, the perfect place to find your place. Today’s spotlight is on Rho Kappa, also referred to as the Social Studies Honor Society.

President of Rho Kappa, Senior Benjamin Mazuca,  sheds some light on what Rho Kappa has to offer.

“Rho Kappa is an inclusive club that talks and discusses the importance of history while trying to help others understand and appreciate history through fun activities.” Mazuca said. “We want others to learn about history in a fun and engaging way, rather than a classroom-teaching way.”

The club is not just here to reinforce what  is taught in the classroom, but to allow students to engage and interact with the lessons they have learned. While incorporating activities and further research into what has already been learned, members of the club have the ability to draw real connections to things that  happened in the past.

“Meetings will usually consist of discussions and planning of National History Day (NHD) which is a contest which represents a theme where students can showcase their passion for history, demonstrated through research.” Mazuca said.

The campus Rho Kappa team earned first place for the group performance category for San Antonio Regional history day just last year, which allowed the team to advance to state. Other than this notable achievement, Mazuca describes the positive experiences he has gained through taking part in Rho Kappa.

“Being the president, I have gotten to work on my public speaking, communication, and group communication skills. We encourage everyone to talk about their ideas, allowing our members to speak their mind about certain topics,” Mazuca said. “I have made new friends through the club and I enjoy talking about my passion for history with others who share that passion. I love the creativity that the club brings, especially when it comes to NHD ideas.”

With all the insight on the National Social Studies Honor Society, history buffs may be curious as to when these meetings occur, and how to join.“Meetings happen every other Thursday in F116. We will meet next on 10/24.” Mazuca said. “And there are no requirements to join.”
