Movie Opinions

The year 2024 has an impressive lineup of movies, but sadly, Inside Out Two is not one that I’m eagerly anticipating. The first movie didn’t appeal to me, mainly due to the character Joy. Her obsession with Riley’s happiness and disregard for her other emotions made me dislike her character. While feeling happy emotions is essential, it’s just as crucial to experience negative emotions as they contribute to personal growth. Joy’s attitude towards the other emotions, particularly Sadness, troubled me. She wanted Riley only to feel happy, and her disregard for Sadness was concerning. In the end, Joy changed, but I’m afraid she might revert to her old ways, judging by her behavior in the Inside Out 2 trailer. Moreover, I found Bing Bong’s fate to be quite upsetting. All he wanted was for Riley to remember him so he could bring her joy. Unfortunately, he had to sacrifice himself for the greater good. He was alive, yet his memory didn’t deserve the respect it deserved. The bus scene indicates how Joy’s toxic behavior made Riley feel nothing. Sadness fixed Joy’s mistake, but Joy never took the time to apologize or thank her or any other emotions for her actions. However, I acknowledge that Joy underwent a transformation and became a better character. Her story arc resonates with many real-world people who make mistakes and try to make amends. She did her best, and that’s all that matters.

Sonic the Hedgehog is everyone’s favorite childhood hedgehog, including mine. We all listened to the classic opening of SEGA when we were younger, so I was stoked when the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out. I have watched parts 1 and 2, and I loved them, part 2 more so than part 1. Part 2 was funny, emotionally packed, and engaging. My favorite scene in particular is the Bridezilla scene. I look forward to part 3 and Shadow’s role in it. Shadow is an anti-hero; he does what needs to be done. While we all love Sonic, he is a classic hero, but he mostly goes off based on his emotions. Shadow is way more logical, and I look forward to seeing how their rivalry goes off—Shadow’s Logic and Reason vs Sonic and his Emotion. I want to see which will dominate over the other in the movie or if they’ll realize both are necessary to live on Earth. The plot, the characters, and the final battle are things I will immensely enjoy watching. I love how each character grew in the previous movies, knowing their mistakes and facing them head-on. I can’t wait to see what happens next in their story.

I loved the Despicable Me movie that came out. I loved its sequels a little less but still found them enjoyable. I appreciated that each character had a purpose for all their problems to solve, whether they be solved on their own or together. Gru learned to care about his daughters and something other than glory in the first movie. In the second movie, he learns to let go of his pride and work together with Lucy, eventually falling in love and marrying her. In the 3rd movie, he learns to accept his brother for who he is, not shun him for not being like him, and work together to save him and his girls. To stop what I think was Gru’s most difficult villain yet, Balthazar Bratt. Bratt had actively worked to harm Gru’s daughters, children in all words, in a way the previous movie villains hadn’t. I think that’s the most horrible type of person to endanger children. Victor did kidnap the girls, but he didn’t harm them, only put them in a glass cage. When he used Margo as a hostage, he only held her; he didn’t actively put her in danger. Sure, he laughed when she almost fell, but he wasn’t the one to cause her to fall in the first place; it was just due to unfortunate circumstances. El Macho didn’t go after the girls in the first place. He did kidnap Lucy and tried to shoot her into a Volcano, but this was understandable since Lucy was an agent from an anti-villain league. He didn’t go after children.Bratt, however, kidnapped the girls using the face of a person they trusted, a person they would eventually come to see as a mother. He put them in a robot that, for all we know, could malfunction at any given time and then put them on the side of a building where they could all fall to their deaths. Angnus, Margo, and Edith are Gru’s entire world. As a father, he would be destroyed to know that his kids were dead because of Bratt. He’s a dad, and Bratt went for the most vulnerable part of his heart: his kids. This is why I think Bratt is the most horrible villain that Gru had to face: He doesn’t care if innocent kids get pulled into the crossfire and will actively seek to harm them if it means getting the upper hand. This is why I can’t wait for the 4th movie to come out because what kind of villain in the next film can be worse than Bratt?

The movie Kung Fu Panda holds a special place in our hearts as we’ve followed Po’s journey from a novice martial artist to a dragon warrior. In the first movie, we saw him train his body to become worthy of defeating Tai Lung. In the second movie, he achieves inner peace and defeats Lord Shen with mental and emotional strength. The third movie saw Po embrace his spiritual side and defeat Kai despite his opponent’s extensive experience. I’m excited to see what the fourth movie will bring, as all past films were a joy to watch. Po’s character is lovable with his gentle and funny personality, kind nature, and exceptional cooking skills. I can’t pick a favorite movie, so the fourth one has big shoes to fill. One of my favorite aspects of the Kung Fu Panda movies is the bond between Po and the Furious Five. They create a balanced and extraordinary team, complementing each other’s strengths and covering their weaknesses. Their teacher, Shifu,  is also remarkable, as he adapts his teaching style until he finds one that suits his students. He never gives up on them, making him a valuable and great teacher. I’m eagerly waiting to see all of them in the upcoming movie.

Of all the 2024 movies, I look forward to Spiderman Beyond the Spider-Verse the most. I, and a lot of others, loved the first and second movies. The second one was my favorite, and it left on a cliffhanger. I screamed internally in rage by the end of it. I wanted to see what would happen between Miles and Earth 42 Miles. One is a hero, and the other is a criminal. His Uncle Aaron is alive, and his father is dead on Earth 42, which will be an alternate-universe shocker to Miles, who has the absolute opposite in his world and is much better off for it. He also knows that this Miles was supposed to be Spiderman, and he isn’t, and the world is a much darker place now since Brooklyn doesn’t have any hope to light their way and stop criminals. Jefferson is going to die in 2 days, and Miles has very little time and a whole spider army trying to stop him. The spider people might be right, though. We saw how universes collapse because the cannon is broken. If Miles saves his father, his universe could collapse, and the spider people are trying to prevent that. They’re not bad people; they’re only trying to do what they think is correct so that the people of Earth 1610 don’t all die. It will only be one person instead of a whole universe of people. Gwen, Peter B, and the rest of the spider crew are off to try to help Miles save his father, which will be interesting to watch. That said, with the threat of Spot, I can’t wait to see which of the 3 comes out on top in the end. With how the second movie had fans scrambling to get to the movie theaters with every seat taken, I can only imagine how big part 3 is going to be when it finally gets released to the fans.
