There was once a student named Randy.
He now haunts the campus auditorium.
Well, legend has it, anyway.
Class of 2007 graduate Stephen Poer first heard the story during his freshman year.
“Supposedly, he was a student who fell from the catwalk and plummeted to his death in the auditorium,” Poer said. “In the front row, there were three chairs directly below the catwalk that were removed and never replaced, and the theory is that Randy fell on them. In reality, I think it’s for disability access, like for people in wheelchairs to park, but that was the story.”
Poer recalls one incident while he was sitting on stage with friends before school. There was a backpack that nobody recognized on the stage, presumably left overnight.
“As we were about to reach for the backpack, it suddenly jerked forward two feet and tumbled off the stage. We all stopped and scuttled back into the black box,” Poer said. “We took a few minutes and came back, and the backpack was on the floor. It didn’t tip over from weight, because it had been securely sitting there before.”
If things were left on stage that shouldn’t have been, those things had often been moved around, displaced, or lost overnight. Poer had never had another interaction with Randy.
“Since I got to school so early, I would often sleep in the loft on furniture or set pieces,” Poer said, It was very cold, but I don’t recall any other incidents with Randy. I think it was because I’m a very clean person and he liked that.”
The legend has been going on for at least 16 years. If you listen closely, you can almost hear noises in the catwalk, and see the lights flickering.
