With the start of a new school year, a new football season also arrives. Every year students and supporters pack the stands in excitement and unity to celebrate and root for the football team as they kick off each game. Although students and players will not be participating in the usual morning pep rallies and spirit days shown on campus, the show still goes on and it is just one of the adjustments that has to be made to fight through this unique season.

With such a different year, many things will have to change and not everything will be able to be how it used to be. There is no doubt that starting a new season in the middle of a global pandemic is a tremendous challenge, but the district and school are working to make sure the proper measures are being put in place to allow the students and coaches to safely continue this season. Football Offensive Coordinator Coach Nathaniel Shaw detailed what it is like navigating through this season.

NISD and UIL have issued the do’s and don’ts for the season, and it is our jobs as players and coaches to abide by them,” Shaw said. “When followed, these protocols that have been set forth are designed to keep everyone involved in athletics safe.” At the end of the day, keeping everyone safe and healthy is the number one priority.

As for the season itself, the team has had an impressive season so far. With a 5-1 record, the goal is to extend the good execution down the road. This new team is determined to keep tackling every obstacle in front of them and push the boundaries towards an amazing season. Shaw expects many obstacles as they go through the season with a new team, but projects a successful result regardless.

“Though talented, we are young and I anticipate having to experience a few growing pains along the way,” Shaw said. “That said, the kids have done an amazing job of staying prepared, and I fully expect that the commitment to the team that many of them demonstrated over quarantine will be on full display this season.”

With a long road ahead, coaches and players are working to stay prepared for anything and make this tough season worth the fight. As the work keeps getting put in, winning results are expected.
