Con la Copa Mundial siendo un honor tan ampliamente de ganar, las naciones de cada equipo se enorgullecen y se preocupan mucho por ver a sus equipos avanzar. Por esta razón, en nuestra comunidad, ver al equipo nacional de fútbol masculino de Estados Unidos (USMNT) avanzar a la ronda 16 ha vuelto la cabeza de quienes siguen el mundo del fútbol religiosamente y de quienes no lo hacen.
La 21 Copa Mundial de la Federación Internacional de la Asociación de Fútbol (FIFA) comenzó el 20 de noviembre de 2022. A pesar de ser la nación más pequeña que lo ha hecho, Qatar está sirviendo como país anfitrión durante cuatro semanas consecutivas para esta competencia tan popular. Los equipos que compiten comienzan divididos al azar en ocho grupos de cuatro. Los dos equipos con más victorias de cada grupo avanzan a una etapa eliminatoria, donde el equipo del primer lugar de cada grupo compite contra el equipo del segundo lugar de otro grupo. Desde allí, los equipos continúan eliminándose el uno al otro hasta que sólo quedan dos para el partido final (que se celebrará el 18 de diciembre). El ganador recibe $42 millones con cada uno de los otros equipos que compitieron recibiendo por lo menos $9 millones (dependiendo de lo lejos que avanzaron).

Sin embargo, no importa el tamaño y la fama de la competencia, siempre hay margen para mejorar.
“Los Estados Unidos jugaron bien,” Davis dijo, “aunque pienso que podrían haber jugado mejor en el juego de eliminación que perdieron ante los Países Bajos.
Con la misma pasión, pero a un nivel diferente, los jóvenes jugadores de nuestra comunidad han encontrado maneras de apreciar los éxitos de diferentes equipos y han aprendido de ello, encontrando inspiración en cómo la mayoría de los jugadores del USMNT jóvenes son comparados con el resto de los competidores.
Davis dijo, “Creo que [sus jóvenes atletas] deberían pensar que cualquier cosa es posible si realmente trabajan en ella (y también si tienen algo de talento).”
Inspirado por el portero de USMNT, Matt Turner, que fue un jugador sin reconocimiento en la universidad que llegó hasta la cima, Davis también dijo, “No tienes que ir por la ruta convencional para llegar a la cima. No tienes que ser la estrella a todas las edades. Sigue trabajando, perseverando y brilla cuando sea tu momento.”
Al igual que Davis, los jóvenes atletas del equipo de fútbol de Taft tienen la misma admiración por los equipos jóvenes y decididos que compiten en la Copa Mundial.

A pesar de que la competencia se centró específicamente en el fútbol masculino, las mujeres jóvenes también están tomando notas para mejorar sus habilidades de juego.
La portera del equipo de fútbol femenino en Taft, Madissyn Harris, dijo, “Honestamente [mirando a los jugadores profesionales] me ayuda mucho… Miro a los porteros en cada juego sin importar el equipo que sea, y realmente me ayuda con como mi distribución, mi comunicación, y cómo jugar mejor como portero… Trato de estudiarlo todo lo que pueda, y realmente afecta mi nivel de habilidad para el fútbol.”
Con esto en mente, los jugadores jóvenes pueden seguir viendo su deporte querido con la esperanza de que ellos también, algún día, serán los que lleven a miles de aficionados a la victoria como Argentina lo hizo en la copa mundial del año pasado.
FIFA World Cup Inspires Local Soccer Community
With the World Cup being such a widely viewed honor to win, the nations of each team take great pride and care in seeing their teams advance. For this reason, in our community, seeing the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) advance to round 16, turned the heads of those who follow the world of soccer religiously and those who don’t.
The 21st The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup commenced on Nov. 20, 2022. Despite being the smallest nation yet to do so, Qatar is serving as the host nation for four consecutive weeks for this highly viewed competition. The teams competing start off divided randomly into eight groups of four, the two teams with the most victories from each group then advancing to a knockout stage, where the first place team of each group competes against another group’s second place team. From there, teams continue to knock one another out until only two are left for the final match (to be held on Dec. 18). The winner receives $42 million with each of the other teams that competed receiving at least $9 million (depending on how far they advanced).
“I watch every game I can, and have recorded every single game, so if I can’t watch it live, I can watch it later,” retired minor league soccer player and Head Women’s Soccer Coach of Taft High School Scott Davis said.
However, no matter the size and fame of the competition, there’s always room for improvement.
“The United States played well,” Davis said, “though I thought they could have played better in the elimination game they lost to the Netherlands.”
With the same passion, but at a different level, our community’s young players have found ways to appreciate the successes of different teams and have learned from it, finding inspiration in how young the majority of the USMNT’s players are compared to the rest of the competitors.
Davis said, “I think [his young athletes] should take away that anything is possible if they truly work at it (and have some talent in it too).”
Inspired by USMNT’s goalkeeper, Matt Turner, who was a college walk-on that made it all the way to the top, Davis also said, “You don’t have to go the conventional route to get there. You don’t have to be the star at every age. Keep working, persevere, and shine when it’s your time.”
Similar to Davis, young athletes of the Taft soccer team have the same admiration for the young and determined teams competing in the World Cup.
Taft men’s varsity goalkeeper Kenneth Aldana said, “I think it’s a great thing, seeing all these young players play for our national team, and it just- it gives me motivation to try harder and maybe, in this 2026 World Cup, I could be playing for the US National Team.”
Despite the competition specifically being focused on men’s soccer, young women are also taking notes to improve their playing skills.
Taft women’s varsity goalkeeper Madissyn Harris said, “Honestly [watching the professional players] help me a lot… I watch the goalkeepers in every game no matter what team it is, and it really helps me with like my distribution, my communication, and how to play better as a goalkeeper… I try to study it as much as I can, and it really does impact my skill level for soccer.”
With this in mind, young players can continue watching their beloved sport in hopes that they too, will one day be the ones carrying thousands of fans to victory the way Argentina did in this past year’s World Cup.
