DIY video tutorials showing how to make mum, tons of twins, sparkly dresses to twirl, song requests, school spirit and fun nights will fill Homecoming Week 2018 on campus.
Almost 2,300 students are celebrating homecoming week with a multitude of on-campus events, including dress up days, athletic events, a spirit walk and pep rally, royal court and dance.
Varsity football will face McCollum in the 2nd annual homecoming game to be played at 7 p.m. on September 27th at Farris Stadium. McCollum is a new opponent for Hawk football, which plays in a different division this year, moving from 4A to 5A. Tickets for the game are available during lunches on Thursday and Friday. Advance rates for students are $4, adults $7.
“We really want to win. We refer to the 212 because 212 means ‘going the extra degree’ and that’s what we want to do,” sophomore Cristian Espinoza said.
To support the players, spirit groups, students and the community are invited to an evening spirit walk and pep rally Wednesday, September 26th at 6 p.m. Beginning on the west side of campus near the band pad, spirit groups and band will parade to the football field for the evening pep rally at 6:30 p.m.
“We are going to play the dance team chart and we are excited,” sophomore Paulina Fierro said.
The week’s festivities will end with an “Arabian Night(s)” themed dance in the cafeteria. The second annual homecoming dance will begin at 7 p.m. and tickets are available for $20 during lunches. When purchasing tickets, students are able to make song requests to ensure students enjoy the sounds of the night.
“‘Stay the Night’ by Zedd is the song I requested because it’s an upbeat song and it’s guaranteed to get everybody on their feet onto the dance floor,” freshman Alexandria Acosta said.
In addition to being an important event at homecoming, the dance also serves as a fundraiser for the Class of 2019.
“(The) homecoming (dance) is what helps our class of 2019 prom, all the students and staff are making our prom come to life, and I can’t wait to see what our prom is gonna look like,” senior Camille Johnson said.
According to senior class sponsor Martha Ramos, the dance is expected to draw approximately 300 students, many of whom will dress up for the Arabian Nights theme.
“There’s going to be lots of colors and jewels everywhere because the theme of homecoming is Arabian-themed,” Johnson said.
