Coins raise funds for StuCo, class

Students scraped and bagged up their extra change in celebration of the annual class coin wars held Nov. 16-20 to raise money for  their class and the Student Council.

“Coin wars is a fantastic idea,” senior Antonio Vasquez said, “I don’t like holding onto my spare change, so why not donate it to the class and give it a purpose?”

For every dollar a person puts into a jar, points are subtracted. This strategy lends itself to a friendly coin war among the students.

“It’s fun to see all the people compete together to see who can get the most points,” Vasquez said.

Sometimes students do not join in the battle until they have been here for awhile.

“I haven’t really participated in coin wars until this year,” junior Autumn Amara said. “But I am taking all the coins I saved in my ‘rainy day’ jar and will be putting them in the junior jar on Thursday for double points.”

Doing the most damage to other classes was the seniors which put them in first place, the juniors came in second, then the sophomores came in third and freshmen placed fourth.

Student Council sponsors coin wars and 50 percent of the proceeds are divided among the classes with the winning class receiving 25 percent. Student council uses the other 50 percent toward school activities.

Students can continue saving their change as  the PTA and Jack C. Jordan Scholarship Committee will hold a Penny Drive in the spring. Funds raised will be go to sponsor a scholarship for one senior from each NISD high school.

“I think that it’s great that whoever donates, offers students assistance in the form of a scholarship to help defer costs of tuition or books,” Spanish teacher Edmond Tejeda said.
