Families that run together, strive, drive, thrive together

It’s the same routine, same uniform, same shoes, same sport but different size. Along with more members, the cross country team is closer than ever.

“For such a large group they are very supportive of each other so it’s like a big family supporting each other,” cross country coach Mary Muenster said.

According to Muenster, the increase in runners present at practices places less stress on the athletes to outrun each other, so the athletes can now focus on personal records. Muenster said that members demonstrate work ethic by completing all posted exercise and attending all practices, including those on weekends. Muenster added that there is a common trend for runners to abandon the team during this part of the season, but this team is an exception.

“Everyone has stuck with it so far,” Muenster said. “Usually we have individuals dropping out and not showing up for practice, but they have been very consistent and willing to do whatever workouts are given.”

Freshman Rachel Kundinger thinks the extension of motivation does not stop on the field, and the team members mentor to each other in all aspects of life.

“We’re there for each other, when someone needs help either academically, emotionally, or physically,” Kundinger said.

Freshman Xochitl Perez said there is a bond between runners that has pushed her to perform her best.

“We are like a big family because we are all connected together and get along,” Perez said. “And they encouraged me throughout the season.”

According to Coach Turner, the young team did exceptional at districts and most runners achieved their best individual times.

“At districts most students hit their personal records, which is most important,” Turner said.

Many of the freshmen runners joined the team because they have a passion to run and have experience in the sport.

“I joined cross country this year because I ran track last year and I love to run,” Perez said.

The team hopes to maintain or grow in numbers for seasons to come.

“Hopefully most people will stick with it and will not drop out next year,” junior Tarik Garcia said.
