ID badges—time consuming focus of attention

Due to the increased demand for safety in Northside schools, the district is enforcing it’s student ID policy where students are required to wear their IDs at all times throughout the school day.

This policy should be changed. Students should only need their IDs to enter the school instead of wearing them constantly throughout the day.

Some students do not follow the rules and are going around campus without their ID without facing consequences. Even though so much attention is focused on this policy, a lot of students are getting away with not wearing IDs or are bending the rules by only wearing them at certain times. This means that all the attention being directed towards the rule is essentially a waste.

Although teachers can check for IDs and send students to the office, this has created a recurring problem thus many students have lunch detention. With lunch detention, comes other problems. Now space from the cafeteria is being taken away from the students who do wear IDs in order to sit those in lunch detention.

Security in our school is essential and it should not be taken lightly, therefore, precautions like having IDs are necessary. If an ID was checked upon entering the school then there would be no reason to constantly wear it since it was already verified. The school doors and gates remain locked throughout the school day with only the front entrance being used which is monitored.

This lack of attention to other situations on campus creates an unbalanced focus on something that should not have to be monitored on students all day. Checking ID’s upon entering the school will reduce the amount of focus teachers and administration have on checking students thus regain time for their classes and other administrative issues.

Regardless, staff and the district should revise these policies to minimize the issues they are causing within campuses. With the right changes, we will be able to have a safe school environment with minimal complications.
