Social media pressure to post on National Boyfriend day

Otherwise known as “National Boyfriend Day”, Oct. 3 is popularized by the media as a day where people post their significant others, or rather their boyfriends in particular, and appreciate them through publicizing their relationship, or further emphasizing that they are in one. Posting on Instagram seems to be the common place to post on “National Boyfriend Day”.

A quote from the movie “Mean Girls” began to trend in relation to this day. Particularly, a scene when Cady Heron, the protagonist, recalled a moment she had with the boy she was crushing on in class. She narrated, “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.”

Senior Adela’s Instagram story for National Boyfriend’s Day depicts them as a couple. Adela said they met in their middle school GT Science class four years ago and have been dating ever since.

“Before we began dating, he was my best friend, and that’s why our relationship is so strong,” Adela said. “Now we love to do so many things together, our favorites are watching shows and going to the movies together.”

Another senior, Maria, and her boyfriend, Stefan, met in their Health Science Theory class and have been dating for 18 months. Maria said that they socialized with other classmates in their table group and then realized how compatible they were.

“Because of that, I am thankful for how open he is to listening,” Maria said. “Especially since I’m a blabber mouth who loves to talk about everything.”

Mutual respect and understanding come into play as Maria feels that they have some of the same and some different interests.

“I enjoy just how much we complement one another with our differences in personality and hobbies,” Maria said. “We are able to work together because we both agree that putting each other’s perspective into consideration matters.”

Kylie, a senior, expressed how much she adores her boyfriend (from another school) through her Instagram story.

“I’ve been with Aaron,” a junior from another school, “for about 10 months now, but I’ve known him for longer,” Kylie said. “He and I started talking because we both liked the same anime, Violet Evergarden, and we got very close quickly because we matched each other’s energy.”

Sharing something in common with Aaron, their relationship went deeper as they got to know each other more.

On a day like National Boyfriends day, it is even more important to Ky that she expresses how proud she is of her relationship with Aaron.

“I think media nowadays is really important,” Kylie said. “So posting your loved one is kind of a special requirement now. I make sure he has a presence on all my social media…I could talk about him all day, if you ask me to.”
