Senior Natalia Flores and junior Kimberly Burton not only made UIL Region Choir, but also advanced to Pre-Area, where they will compete for a spot in the UIL Area Choir.
“Making region is a big accomplishment for me since I’m sort of new to ‘professional’ choir,” Burton said.
While this is the beginning of musical competitions for Burton, this year marks the end of seven successful years in choir events for Flores.
“The first year I went to region, it was at the same school region was this year – my last year,” Flores said. “I closed the loop and I’ve done the best I can do.”
Choir director Martha Bagwell said Flores and Burton are developed and grew in their abilities in preparation for the competition.
“They have really improved their skill level and I am so proud of what they have already achieved,” Bagwell said.
Flores and Burton are learning new skills as well as expanding their understanding of music.
Burton said, “I’m getting more knowledgeable about music itself. Hopefully, I get to advance and learn even more.”
Advancement is not just on Burton’s mind, their choir director is also behind them.
“It would be such an honor to see them progress onto the Area competition and from there, All-State,” Bagwell said.
However, winning at competitions is not Burton’s ultimate goal.
“I want to travel and improve the way choirs sound,” Burton said. “Going to region let me experience being led by a clinician. It is a great experience for me and my future.”
Burton has the idea Bagwell wishes for all of her students to have.
“It is our hope to create lifelong producers and consumers of music,” Bagwell said. “I want to nurture a passion for music that [my students] will pursue and enjoy for the rest of their lives.”
