Students in Pharmacology and Sterile Processing and Distribution went to the Feik School of Pharmacy at the University of Incarnate Word on Nov. 16-17 to gain first-hand knowledge of the pharmaceutical field.
“The trip was especially enlightening to a field that not everyone always thinks of,” senior Tyler Przybyla said. “When [someone] says doctor or medicine, no one immediately thinks pharmacist.”
Students also visited a pharmacy museum within the campus.
“It’s a small one [museum],” senior Kelsey Shannon said. “But there were so many cool artifacts with awesome stories.”
Alongside having a tour of the school, students also participated in hands-on activities.
“Packing the pills was pretty cool, because it kind of gave me an inside look of what a career in this field can be like,” Shannon said. “Plus I got to apply things I’ve learned into mock real practice.”
Students were given candy and flour to simulate ingredients.
“I really liked the compounding we did using stuff like smarties,” Shannon said. “It made it feel like we were actually making real drugs.”
