Every year, teachers meet to decide on which of them will be the teacher of the year. This is the most dedicated and most deserving teacher, and this year, it was Latin and English teacher John Chu.
“I was very surprised in the sense that there are so many great teachers here that are dedicated and passionate and considerate and knowledgeable,” Chu said. “What they do, whether they know it or not, inspires me and keeps me going.”
It is not just the current teachers that Chu draws inspiration from. He learned more than just course work when he was a student.
“I’ve been very fortunate in my own education to have really memorable, wonderful teachers along the way,” Chu said. “I can’t say that I’ve ever done anything purely on my own because I’m a product of everything they’ve given me.”
Chu seems to be following in the steps of his past teachers with his current students, not just in the classroom, but also through the numerous clubs he sponsors.
“Mr. Chu deserves teacher of the year because of all the hard work he puts into the school,” junior and secretary of Drama Club Autumn Oyemade said. “You can just tell that he really cares about what’s going on with his students.”
Chu said that his main goal was to help his students discover and expand on the skills they have, and his success in this shows in more ways than this award.
“It’s really important to me that my students feel like they’re growing along the way, whatever way that may be,” Chu said.
