This past Saturday the Holmes Huskies Varsity football team played Sam Houston at Gustafson stadium, falling to the Hurricanes 37-14. Despite the loss, there was still some great action on and off the field.

Just before the game, the Holmes players ran through the banner with pride and excitement, eager to get on the field and show what they learned this past off-season. Not only were the players excited, but the fans were just as, if not, even more excited to see their fellow Huskies perform.

The first half didn’t quite go in the direction the Huskies would’ve wanted. Errors on both sides of the ball such as penalties, missed opportunities on offense, and a few misread plays on defense, placed the Huskies down two possessions at the end of the first half. When the team managed to play error-free, they showed moments of great potential. Towards the end of the first half, Sophomore D’ Qurian Haney had an impressive 13 yard run going through several Sam Houston players and picking up a first down. The crowd cheered and Haney celebrated the big play.

The second half, the Huskies were determined to put points on the board and prove to themselves they still had that Husky fight. Both of the Huskies scores came in the fourth quarter; one coming from a Haney one yard touchdown run with a successful two point conversion made by Senior Kierian Mccall, and the other score was a 20 yard touchdown pass to Senior Quentrevious Wright from Senior Jesse Vara.

The varsity players were not pleased with the results from Saturday’s game nor was the coach, but it’s a start. The Huskies showed some real heart at the end of the game, rather than completely giving up, they put up two scores, despite the insurmountable lead. The only thing the varsity players can do now is practice, watch the tape, and give maximum effort against Highlands High School tonight. And the only thing we as the fans can do is to continue supporting our fellow huskies no matter the outcome. The Huskies take on the Owls at Alamo Stadium, with a 7:30pm kickoff.
