Students are going all in for homecoming week this week, and enjoying traditions and activities. The buzz on campus isn’t just about homecoming though, with students discussing their opinions on the growing protests during the National Anthem by NFL players upset with the state of the union.

The tree decorating and paw painting in the circle remains a beloved tradition that students participated in over the weekend.

“My favorite part of homecoming so far has been Sunday, because all the seniors decorated the paws and painted them and that was really fun,” senior Jared Pereida said.

A televised morning pep rally and traditional outdoor evening pep rally have students plenty of opportunity to get spirited.

“I’m pretty much just doing everything that’s in the week or dressing up in green and gold as much as I can during pep rallies and showing school spirit,” junior David Morgan said.

The spirit and pride Huskies are feeling in their school draws a parallel to how many feel toward their country. NFL player protests of police brutality during the National Anthem, have led to a lot of discussion amongst students about their methods and their message.

“Kapernick sat down because he believed there was too much discrimination and America is not as great as the National Anthem says or you know stands for. Honestly, I can agree. We’re an awesome country but it’s not as good as it can be,” senior Jorge Osorto said.

Others agreed with the message, while taking exception to the method.

“I do see what [Kapernick] sees are problems, but I feel like it’s kind of disrespectful  to people who have died in our country and if they want to protest, there should be another way, not just sitting down,” junior David Sigvaldson said.
