Last week the varsity football team competed against the Marshall Rams at Gus Stadium and ended up victorious, beating Marshall 48-21 and improving their record to 4-2 on the season. The win against the Rams puts the Huskies at one win and no losses in division play.

The first quarter was a slow start for both teams, but the Huskies did manage to turn the game in their favor. With two field goals from sophomore Adair Nunez, one from 26 yards out and the other from thirty yards out, the Huskies went up 6-0, giving them the momentum heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter is where things really started to heat up. Sophomore D’ Qurian Haney ran for a two yard touchdown giving the Huskies a 13-0 lead over the Rams, and the Rams responded right back with a touchdown of their own making the score 13-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Senior Kalvin Khath returned it 88 yards to make the score 20-7 heading into the closing minutes of the half, but the Rams pushed hard enough to put up one more score to end the half 20-14.

After coaches and players made adjustments at halftime, the second half was all Huskies as they put up a whopping 28 points in the second half. The Rams defense had no answer for the Husky offense, who scored relentlessly.

The Huskies started off the half with an explosive play catching the eyes of many, even getting some recognition from news channels. Senior James Valdez stepped back from scrimmage and threw a high ball to junior Quentrevious Wright. The ball looked well-overthrown, and in some cases might have been intercepted by the opposing team, but Wright made an unbelievable leap and one-handed catch and then took it to the house for a 70 yard touchdown reception making the score 27-14.

That play made Max Prep’s top ten plays, and earned play of the week honors from local news. Valdez knew he could have confidence throwing a risky ball to Wright.

“I was thinking, ‘Wow, nothing is going to stop this man.’,” quarterback Valdez said of Wright’s one handed catch.

The Husky defense played a huge role in this victory, holding Marshall to only 7 points in the second half. Senior Ethan Ramirez was the star on defense with 11 tackles, one sack, and one tackle for a loss of yards. But it was the Husky defense as a whole that shined the brightest throughout the game, limiting Marshall’s offense.

From that moment on, the Huskies began to put on a show, scoring touchdown after touchdown. Running back Haney ran for a 30 yard touchdown while Valdez ran for two one yard touchdowns. After Valdez’s last rushing touchdown, the game ended 48-21, with the Huskies taking the win to rebound from a tough loss last week against Stevens HS.

It was a great overall team effort to bring home the win. Both sides of the ball played phenomenal and poised. Despite the tough loss from last week, it didn’t seem like it had any affect on the Huskies at all. They knew they had made mistakes, but rather than dwell on it, they stepped up and made a statement. They look to continue their path of success as they face Brennan HS tonight at 7:30pm at Farris Stadium.

Come out and support your Huskies no matter the outcome. Husky fight never dies.
