Defining beauty can be difficult. Usually, we associate the word with one’s outer appearance, overlooking what’s within a person, which can also be beautiful. We constantly hear the overplayed “Don’t judge a book by its cover” or “It’s not about what’s on the outside”, and we convince ourselves that we do follow those moral guidelines that allow us to accept people for who they are and not their appearance. However, one can easily be influenced by society’s expectations when it comes to the definition of beauty. Social media showcases beauty in ways very few people can relate to. There’s so much more to it.

Last year, former senior Yamel Breiter and I decided to film a video about the concept of beauty in the eyes of Holmes and BC students. As our peers shared with us their authentic definitions as well as what they find beautiful in a person, our minds opened up to the various forms of beauty. Our biggest takeaway was that everyone sees beauty differently, and that within itself is a beautiful thing.
