Surviving Middle School for Incoming 6th Graders
Gianna Marques-Ozuniga (8)
I spent most of my 5th grade year excited, but also dreading middle school. Like the mixed feeling you get when you’re on a rollercoaster you’re excited for the ride but absolutely terrified for the first drop. I think many 5th graders now feel the same way.
6th grade is a difficult year. It’s a year where you transition from being the oldest and the group of people all the underclassmen (1st graders, 4th graders ect.) look up to, to being the group of kids that the 7th and 8th graders make fun of. However starting middle school isn’t all that bad you get to have a little more freedom and being a little more independent.
However most 6th graders are overwhelmed by this big change and try their best to fit in. Skipping class, goofing around, smoking etc. Most habits that start in middle school are hard to break and can later affect your life in the future
Advice from Upperclassmen
- 8th grader Aubrey Rodregez says, “Making sure you’re grades are one of your first priorities don’t slack off and make sure you’re accomplishing to the best of your abilities”
- 8th grader Preistley Hurrera says, “Not everyone’s your friend, be careful who you trust and who you hangout with, because a lot of people can decisive you”
- Elenna Allen who is also a 8th grader says, “Make sure you stay true to yourself and to not date around, don’t have a new significant other every day”
Middle school can be scary but if you try not to change who you are for other people. Being yourself can attract people who are similar to you, it’s so much more refreshing to not associate yourself with fake and ugly people.
