Interim Council Woman Rosie Castro visited campus to answer questions from the Current Events club and history students.

“We want to keep building on the momentum from this past year.” Current Events sponsor Alex Sundin said. “We want to bring in more guest speakers so that kids all over Marshall can hear from people in our community who make big decisions about all of our collective futures.”

The Current Event’s club goal is to foster engagement in news stories from all around the world. They compete in UIL but their main focus is to find value in news around the world.

“You need to know what’s going on around you,” senior Monk Perkins said. “It’s an ignorant decision to not stay aware of what could affect you or other people.”

Rosie Castro was an activist in the 70s and continues her work to this day. Sundin said that her entire life has been a current event.

“I want my students in Current Events to be able to connect with the things that we are talking about outside of the classroom environment,” Sundin said. “Having a Councilwoman like Mrs. Castro come to campus to talk with our students only broadens their understanding and connection to San Antonio’s current events.”

With this presentation, Sundin hopes to continue the momentum that this presentation gave them and hopes current events can continue to have speakers.

“I want kids all over Marshall can hear from people in our community who make big decisions about all of our collective future,” Sundin said. “We are all in this together, but we must also be asking questions.”
