This is officially the second year for the Drone team. Last year, there were at least two members, this year there are around seven members.
The team meets every Tuesday and Wednesday’s on the second floor of the B building to practice flying drones through obstacle courses. The next meeting is planned to be on October 24th.
Lieutenant Commander Adan Nieto now sponsors the team and hopes to take more members to competitions than last year.
“I’d like to take as many kids as possible right now, we’ve got seven or eight showing interest so if all seven or eight stick with me I’ll take all eight,” said Nieto.
“Whenever we go recruiting from middle schools I have a certain spot I take off from, I do a couple tricks in the air,” said, Sophomore Zachary Palasky, Captain of the Drone team.
A way they plan to further expand their team is by posting signs and later in the year go to middle schools to show them how they fly the drones.
Last school year only Palasky and Salazar competed at Medina Valley High.
“ Last year, it was only me and another, Cadet Salazar. She isn’t here now, “said Palasky.
After their first competition, Salazar and Palasky placed first in the Obstacle course portion.
“I’m hopeful to say that we might have another competition this year. Since we have a competition that we won under our belt already so, that might get us out there,” said Palasky.
