For Hispanic Heritage Month MASA, the Mexican American studies after school club, came up with a variety of ways to celebrate the holiday.
Hispanic Heritage Month is the celebration of Hispanic people and the culture that they bring. It takes place between September 15 to October 15.

“Hispanic Heritage Month to me is really an opportunity to raise awareness,” Mr. G, Mexican American studies teacher, said. “It’s almost like we’ve been given permission to just overload people with things that we’re proud of whether that’s our food, our people, our culture, our music or our art.”

Hispanic leaders like Ceasar Chavez and Dolores Huerta and celebrities like Selena, Rita Moreno and Ritchie Valens, are people who made a great impact on the culture today.
“Showing people who are of the same ethnicity or same background, be successful, help students to want to achieve more and do more and feel like they too can accomplish what these celebrities, activists and famous people have done,” senior Hannah Rosales, Co-President of MASA said.

MASA created flyers, worked with the student council and made homeroom slides in order to acknowledge and represent the holiday.
“We have such a large Hispanic population on campus, Rosales said. “We should have more things around campus that reflect our culture, more opportunities that people can participate in and get involved in.”

Free community events like painting a mural on the west side or watching a movie at the drive-in theater are some more ways that help people get in touch with their Hispanic culture and get a better sense of community.
“It’s not always every day where you see a Hispanic hero or Hispanic celebrity, announced on the news,” senior Mario DeLuna said. “I feel like to bring awareness to that and just to see someone like you represented is pretty cool.”
