Fall entertainment: what to watch

Kace Schermerhorn

Fall is a great time for new show releases; it’s when people bundle up and binge watch for hours and hours on end. This fall, Netflix, along with Hulu and Amazon Prime will be releasing several new shows, including premiering a few movies that have been out for a while. Hulu has also had some interesting releases this fall. On October 23rd, they released the second season of “Castle Rock.” The show is primarily horror set in the Stephen King multiverse. “Castle Rock” combines the storytelling of King’s best works, creating a very dark series. It prominently figures on King’s famous books, such as Cujo, The Dark Half, IT, and Needful Things. The show has had very positive ratings, having an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and received a four out of five star rating by Common Sense Media. The second season looks very promising and may surpass the first in views and overall rating.

On October 17th, Netflix premiered “The Karate Kid” directed by Harald Zwart, starting Jaden Smith. The film is about a 12-year-old boy named Dre Parker who has moved to China due to his mother’s career path. Dre meets Mr. Han to help him improve upon his karate skills, as he wants to conquer the school bully, Cheng. Mr. Han teaches Dre all about Kung Fu so that he will be able to get the better of Cheng and prove to Mei Yeng, his school sweetheart, that he’s the one for her.

Following that major release, Netflix will be broadcasting “The Bucket List” after they have removed it and released it several times. The movie, being released on Christmas Day in 2007 was directed by Rob Reiner and starrs Morgan Freeman as Carter Chambers (who is a car mechanic) and Jack Nicholson as Edward Cole (who is a billionaire). It’s about the two getting extremely ill and landing in the same hospital room. They have no relation to each other, but soon find out they are similar in the sense that they want to see and much as they can and do as much as possible before their deaths. Even though the doctor doesn’t agree with their choice, they leave the hospital and set out on an incredible journey together.

In recent news, it was announced that “The Office” will soon be taken off of Netflix, roughly around the end of 2020. This sparked up a lot of controversy as it is arguably Netflixs’ most popular show. “My favorite show is ‘The Office,’” sophomore Grace Kallberg said. “I watch T.V. more because of the show, and I started watching it around 4 years ago.” The show aired in 2005 and ran until 2013 with 9 total seasons and 201 episodes within those seasons. Throughout its run, racking in millions of views and tons of loyal fans.

Along with “The Office” being removed, “Pretty Little Liars” was removed from Netflix in late July. “My favorite show is Pretty Little Liars,” sophomore Jaymeson Hacker said. “I like the show because it’s a modern day mystery show, but I can also relate to the characters.” The show released its final season in June of 2017, after having a total of 7 seasons. It’s one in Netflix’ most watched shows, and fans are still wondering when, or if, the platform will bring the show back.

Students find Frozen 2, comical and heartwarming

In the Disney animated film Frozen 2, Elsa and her sister are put in charge to go away on an adventure far away from their Kingdom of Arendal. As directed by Jennifer Leigh and Chris Buck, on this journey the two sisters soon find out how both of their parents disappeared. This movies really enjoyable, cute, funny and family friendly. Of course Elsa had her own signature song that is bold and expresses her feelings within the scene. Overall, the movie had intense and heartwarming parts.

In order to really understand the movie, you’d have to watch the first Frozen which can be found on Disney+. The new film Frozen 2 was released November 22 and can only be found in theaters. Students shared they liked the characters and were entertained especially by Olaf.

“Olaf is my favorite character because he’s funny. My favorite scene was when Olaf acted out the first Frozen movie. If I could change anything in the movie, I’d make Kristoff more important in the overall movie,” junior Haley Brown said.

Students enjoyed the heartwarming scenes and how some of the fun scenes ended with great singing.

“My favorite character was Olaf because he added funny moments and brought joy. My favorite scene was the part where Olaf was explaining what happened in the first movie and I thought it was really funny and it had really funny references to the first movie. If I could change anything about the movie I’d give a girlfriend just like the rumors said would happen,” junior Emeline Longoria said.

And the award for most popular character goes to…

“Olaf is my favorite character. The part where Olaf was explaining how water has memory. One thing I would change would be how Elsa acts. She was more weird compared to the first movie,” junior Heather Jasik said.

“Selena: The Series” exploits Selena’s legacy

Nearly a year ago Netflix announced the development of “Selena: The Series”, a biographical drama series about the late Tejano singer, known as the Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla. The series seems to be intended to honor Selena and her legacy, however, the exploitative nature of its creation cannot be overlooked. At its core, “Selena: The Series” feels more like an exploitative cash grab rather than a commemorative work.

The show aims to depict the successful life and tragic death of the late Tejano singer who was the first female to successfully make it in the originally male-dominated genre of Tejano. Yet the story has already been told in the 1997 biographical film “Selena”, a movie made over 20 years ago. Grant- ed the show could potentially go into slightly more detail about the singer and reach audiences on an international level, it will be the exact same story already depicted through film. Retelling the same story is redundant and further suggests the primary motivation behind its creation was monetary instead of honorary.

In recent years, Selena has surpassed the Hispanic icon she’s known and loved as and morphed into a pop-culture legend. With the MAC makeup line titled “Selena” launched in September of 2016, the Quintanilla’s failed fan-funded $500,000 Selena hologram. Evolution tour titled “Selena the One” in 2018, and the “White Rose” clothing collection inspired by the Tejano singer Forever 21 released in March of 2019 in addition to the new Netflix series, it seems as if the Quintanilla family, who of serve as executive producers of “Selena: The Series”, is abusing Selena’s ascending celebrity status. As opposed to preserving her memory, the series adds to the feeling of perverting Selena’s memory.

It’s easy to get lost in the excitement of launches and releases that appear to honor the legacy of such an iconic figure, especially one who Hispanic culture within society and empowers the Hispanic community. However, as fans, it’s important to be aware of the differences between commemorating Selena and exploiting her. There’s a fine line between the two that has been crossed one too many times and “Selena: The Series” is just one more way it’s been crossed.

Audience reaction to Avengers Endgame

Avengers: Endgame was one of the most, if not the most, anticipated movies since the ending of Avengers: Infinity War shocked audiences worldwide. The fourth installment in the Avengers series focuses on the remaining Avengers – Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk,Thor, Hawkeye, and Iron Man – along with Rocket Raccoon, Nebula, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel figuring out a way to bring back those they’ve lost during of The Snap and defeating Thanos in an epic final battle.

Amidst the growing excitement many theories regarding character deaths, who would defeat Thanos, and how Thanos would be defeated began circulating through social media platforms. Students also had theories about the film.

“All of the decimated were never gone entirely. They were only trapped in the Soul Stone,” junior Gabriel Munoz said.

Fans began theorizing those who disintegrated during The Snap weren’t dead, but had their souls trapped in the Soul Stone. One popular theory circulating among fans was the Avengers using time travel to defeat Thanos.

“I think that they are either going to use the Time Stone or the Quantum Realm to travel back in time before the snap happened and fix their mistake,” junior Mariam Thomas said.

Also debated was who’d defeat Thanos. Speculation revolved around Captain Marvel, Iron Man, or Captain America defeating Thanos with the Infinity Stones.

“I honestly think Captain America is gonna beat Thanos,” senior Destiny said.

Students also expressed a lot of excitement for the return of their favorite heroes lost in The Snap.

“I’m excited to see Spider-Man alive again. His death scene in Infinity War made me cry a lot and I miss him so much,” senior Gabby Delos Santos said.

Regardless of which theories proven true or false, Avengers: Endgame was a record-breaking film that left audiences wowed and depressed.

New Battle Royale challenging Fortnite

Apex Legends by RESPAWN is a battle royal similar to Fortnite. Pitting sixty players against each other with only up to three winning, it’s a high stake high-risk game that in many ways can be considered a survival horror game in its own way.

RESPAWN released Titanfall 2 in 2016 to critical acclaim, but commercial failure. Having an action-packed and original campaign and a small but dedicated multiplayer scene,Titanfall 2 was criminally underplayed, and currently boasting a meager 2000 concurrent players.

Since Titanfall’s release, fans have been scared since EA’s purchase of RESPAWN Entertainment, and EA’s bad reputation for buying then slaughtering beloved studios. Then the concept of a free to play battle royal with loot boxes under EA was spelling out a disaster. Luckily it wasn’t a disaster, it was a miracle with over ten million players in under 72 hours and no ad campaign leading up to release something about Apex is captivating crowds or maybe it’s just because it’s free.

RESPAWN made the most creative and innovative battle royals in years, using a new revive system whereby picking up a banner from a dead teammate you can go to a revive station and use that to bring them back to life(your teammates can revive you likewise).

“It’s a lot more forgiving especially with the banners and stuff but even if your teammate dies completely you can still get them back in the game and I just think that it’s more forgiving to the players,” Jude Hinojosa said.

Alongside the new banner revive system, Apex has implemented a new way to launch squads from the starting jet.At the beginning of the game when leaving the jet, you will have a randomly selected member of your team controlling where the team will go but at any time a member of the team may choose to divert from the route the leader takes.

These systems have contributed to a fresh and unique experience in the battle royale genre and it’s no surprise that they have achieved staggering player counts within the first few weeks. With EA funding Apex’s monetary situation is bound to be doing well.
