“Horns forward San Antonio, the Brahmas back down from no one.”
For the first time in years since the Alliance of American Football league ended in 2019, San Antonio has a professional football team named the San Antonio Brahmas that is competing in the Xtreme Football League [XFL] for its inaugural season.
San Antonio was not originally mapped out to be a hosting city within the XFL when it was first rebooted in 2020. The XFL has had numerous setbacks in creating a successful football league, including changes in ownership and filing for bankruptcy in 2020. However, when former WWE superstar and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and ex-wife and business partner Dany Garcia bought the organization, many aspects of the company changed including the San Antonio Brahmas replacing the Los Angeles Wildcats after the Wildcats’ losing streak in the 2020 reboot.
Although San Antonio was one of the later editions to the XFL, the amount of enthusiasm San Antonians have brought to this league including the creation of fan groups such as the “Brahma Mammas”, an all female fan group for the Brahmas, has led to both owners of the company to have a large faith in our city. From having the season opener within the Alamodome to having announced that the championship game will also be hosted within the same stadium, the owners have high hopes that San Antonio will be one of the leading factors to why they will ultimately succeed in this reboot.
While the mascot, the ‘Brahma’ was Johnson’s signature mascot as a professional wrestler, it also has a significant tie to the city of San Antonio; ‘Brahma’ is short for the bull breed the American Brahman which pays homage to the city’s successful stock show and rodeo.
While the Brahmas undergone recent changes including the loss of Vice President of Communications Jeff Alstader due to a personal issue that was not disclosed, the team has a bright future ahead. From drafting consistent Jack Coan as their starting quarterback to having ex-Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward be the Head Coach for the San Antonio Brahmas, the team has a strong chance of victory.
Following their crushing season opener defeat against the St. Louis Battlehawks, the team was able to rebound by having a decisive victory over the Orlando Guardians.
“It almost brought tears to my eyes; I care for these players. I want a win for them more than myself,” Ward told San Antonio Express News.
Now traveling to Houston to go against the Houston Roughnecks, so long as they maintain their momentum, the Brahmas look to work their way to their hometown championship game.
“[San Antonio] has a very big disdain for not having a NFL team…so why not go to a game?” San Antonio Brahmas Director of Team Operations Jose Jefferson told Our Sports Central. “With the XFL we now have that investment.”
