The Highly Achieved, Karlee English

Karlee English, senior at Communications Arts High School, possesses many qualities that distinguish her from other students. For example, she is involved in several things in school such as Spanish National Honor Society (which she was

the Vice President of), National Honor Society, and she is a National Merit Scholar. Additionally, English is the salutatorian of her class and will enter college as a sophomore with 62 credit hours. English not only excels in school but also outside of school. She has been in gymnastics for over 8 years and has taught gymnastics during the summer to younger children who also go to her gym. So how does she balance her education, competitions, and honor societies?

With all of these responsibilities it can be challenging, English says, “Challenges would definitely be like the time management thing, but I’ve gotten better at that.”

One of English’s greatest qualities that distinguishes her from other students is her ability to go the extra mile and take initiative, whether it be by tutoring or studying during her free time.

Admittedly she said, ‘‘I literally watch crash course videos as I’m getting ready in the morning or at night.”

She even goes looking for practice tests, even if there are some already assigned to her by her teachers.

“She exceeds expectations and researches the questions and works to make sure they are being answered correctly,” said Maestra Dora Delgado, English’s Spanish 4 AP teacher.

Despite the difficulty of something, she strives to do better and learn the information given to her and that especially includes Spanish.

“I’ve had to go out of my way to work on my study skills specifically for Spanish and go to tutoring, which I don’t normally do,” said English.

She shows great ambition towards succeeding in everything she does no matter the difficulty something may be.

“Internally, I can’t do that (the minimum),”English said, “I have to do it to the best of my abilities because I always like to be the best as I possibly can be.”

She shows great determination and ambition in everything she does which not only stands out to her teachers but also her coaches. While her determination and ambition is notable, English’s humility and ability to acknowledge and learn from her mistakes is also admirable.

“I love Biology, but the tests are very hard for AP Biology,” said English,“… I’m okay with getting a B on a test, and I used to not be. I used to be like, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe I got a B,’ but now I’m like, ‘It’s okay; I’ll do the retest, and it’ll get better and that’s what’s important and I’m learning.’’

English also exhibits kindness for others. She not only checks on her friends but also helps them when needed and is a very reliable and dependable person. She speaks highly of her teachers and friends and is grateful for coming to Communications Arts. This year’s valedictorian, Peyton Braun, is one of these close friends who she has known since sixth grade.

“Comm Arts has given me a lot of opportunities that other schools wouldn’t, and Peyton certainly deserves to be valedictorian; So I’m happy to be on stage with her.”

Furthermore, English surely has outdone herself during her high school years. She is a very outstanding student who deserves the medal for being salutatorian, and we at Comm Arts hope to see where the next chapter takes her.
